The Pelipper drops to the ground, limp.

Dennis looks shell-shocked, eyes wide with terror.

"Nononono not again!"

It runs over to the Pelipper.

"Please! Wake up! I didn't mean to..."

They're audibly sobbing, apologising over and over, as the video fades out

The Spider Mansion was not for the faint of heart. As kind as Truffle can be, her pets often got the better of her and frightened any guests that came by. There were common visitors that came by to share red drinks that were sweeter than wine, dishes of meats that were harder to catch than any mythical beast... and even they were still put off by her arachnid friends.

Smiling with fangs, the widow would share feasts with this small group, trying to get them used to the presence of her friends that she promised wouldn't bite... much. The laughs that they shared... ah, how she missed such. All of them have gone their separate ways, though she still hears of escapades through the grape vine. Well, less of a vine, more of a thread. A spider thread.

She still remembers the last meeting where all of them had gathered for a bloodied full course meal. A thief who stuck to bodies instead of gems, their reluctant bartender cousin, a redhead who had long been used to this whole process, a servant whom all treated with care, and Truffle herself. The words of the thief rang sour through the air- of spreading the curse, she remembers. They were dishevelled that day, and the poor servant that followed them around couldn't bare to even fake a smile. Something horrid had occured, though the spider whisper couldn't figure it out at the time.

Perhaps if she had better analysis that wasn't from hindsight, she would know that these were the eyes of mourners very similar to herself. The spider charmer's experiences were far behind her, though how she missed it then was something that she regrets. What was once a small 'cursed' clique had become a town terror.

The widow still remembers finding a poor shop owner mourning the person she had become closest with, coping with an unhealthy amount of denial despite her aid.

The widow still remembers finding a half-eaten child bleeding at her doorstep, crying and sobbing as the salt from her tears irritated her wounds.

The widow remembers hearing through the spider's web... countless lives being eaten away at, destroyed by this 'disease'- this 'infection' that has gone too far.

As someone living in the Spider Mansion, Truffle is not one considered 'faint of heart'. Even still, the shroud of fear that had gathered over the town she lived a short walk away from... not to mention elsewhere... it was enough to perturb her. Looking up to the large clump of spiders on the ceiling, the grimace that had adorned her face slowly faded.

One day the chaos outside will calm. She's heard it through the spider's thread. Her bravest eyes to the outside have assured her. And whilst she waits for the day to arrive, her sweet friends that don't bite... much... will keep her company. Help her find food. Though she wishes to keep those that cannot withstand her home company... being wrapped in silk and bathed in stomach acid isn't particularly a welcoming answer.

Thinking about marriage/women's rights on Vulcan Some may think that T'Pring not being allowed to divorce Spock was because he was going through the pon farr but if she were allowed to divorce him at all she probably would have done that a long time ago, confirmed by T'Pol when she's speaking with Koss, who isn't suffering from the pon farr. She says that he can choose another mate (without invoking a fight it seems: note the difference between a 'mate' and a 'challenger') and after he makes it clear that nothing she says will change his mind about marrying her, she finally threatens to declare a kal-if-fee. It's clear that Vulcan women cannot divorce/refuse to marry a man they've been betrothed to under any circumstances if A) He himself doesn't consent to ending their marriage or B) She doesn't have someone else waiting in the wings to be given to in his stead. Though, if the challenger she selects fails to win the fight, she'll have to marry her betrothed anyway unless (again) he decides he doesn't want her after the challenge. That seems like an incredibly unfair system, heavily biased towards men. SNW is an alternate universe in many obvious respects but most egregiously in that T'Pring has a lot of non-canonical agency over her relationship with Spock. It's interesting to me that Vulcan society has women in many positions of power and treats women as equal to men from what I've seen despite these laws. We don't really see Vulcans exhibiting a misogynistic attitude towards women in general but in TOS (perhaps because of its general writing style but it's still interesting to note) both Sarek and Spock take on patriarchal attitudes specifically regarding wives. Amanda says that 'of course' Sarek commands her because "he is a Vulcan and I am his wife." It's worthwhile in my eyes to note that she specifies 'wife' instead of attributing this attitude to women as a whole. Again, with TOS' writing style it wouldn't be out of place for her to say "he is a man and I am a woman." Spock, while in a pon farr induced irritation, states that it's "undignified for a woman to play servant to a man that isn't hers" - again implying that there's something specific about being a Wife in Vulcan society which is different from being a woman in general and demands subservience to a husband. This could perhaps stem from the extreme sense of ownership that Vulcan law has permitted men to have over women. A woman legally cannot point blank refuse marriage. There is no option which guarantees she won't have to marry her betrothed other than death. When T'Pau speaks of T'Pring she refers to her as being 'property' and Stonn, before being interrupted, states he's made 'the ancient claim' - we don't know what this is because he gets cut off but it's obvious they're both using the language of Vulcan law. Men are permitted true freedom to choose. If a woman wants to choose someone else to be with there is no option available to her other than the kal-if-fee which might result in the death of the one she wants to be with. And, if her lover fails, her husband can still just decide he wants to marry her and she'll be forced to. T'Pring gives two scenarios: One where Spock 'frees' her and one where he doesn't - it's still ultimately his decision which is clear when he ends the conversation with "Stonn, she is yours." This again isn't just because of the pon farr as T'Pol also goes through this. Koss can choose another mate and when the option is talked about there's no implication that this would result in any sort of fight (both by the casualness of its mention and by the fact that there's no formal word for it unlike the kal-if-fee.) Also, the fact that Koss does eventually grant T'Pol a divorce and it's all fine means that T'Pol isn't lawfully required to have another man waiting if her HUSBAND doesn't want her. It's ONLY required if SHE doesn't want her husband. Tradition must take precedence over individual desire UNLESS!!! You're a man. Then it's fine. Like, your parents might not be happy but legally you're golden.

thinking about orvs metatextual engagement with its genre and specifically how that interacts with its women again. kim dokja is a self insert for the reader - what he thinks is largely meant to represent what we think, especially in the beginning before sing shong really fleshes out his character. kim dokja sees the world through tropes, directly acknowledging the genre around him and the cliches we expect e.g. the overpowered mc, the scheming villain, the beautiful heroine.

but a major part of his arc is deconstructing this reductionist view of the world in a way that parallels the author's deconstruction of the genre, and that plays really well with the way orv writes women. yoo sangah is perhaps the best exanple - shes introduced as the heroine, a one-dimensional pretty girl who in any other novel would become kim dokja's love interest. but the authors allow her to be her own character, directly challenging the stereotype of the heroine and calling attention to the genre's typical lack of depth for such a character. i think this undercurrent plays in the background often but really comes to the forefront when yoo sangah reminds kim dokja of her putting pepper in their bosses' coffee, a memory kim dokja had supressed because it didn't fit with the pretty girl persona he made for her.

i interpret that moment as yoo sangah pushing her way out of the mold of heroine often found in these stories, demanding a depth be added to her character, asking kim dokja - and thus the reader - to see her in her entirety, to see the heroine archetype for what she could be. orv is at all times in conversation with its genre, and its simultaneous writing of female characters with agency and depth and acknowledgement of the tropes these women are expected to fulfill is undeniably a part of that. and its a part i enjoy. most of the time.

"Ha," Soji managed to force out in acknowledgement, much quieter and a lot more shaky than intended. He wished he hadn't tried to respond out loud at all. He adjusted his feet and brought his sword up, aligning himself to all the correct angles to make the cut expected of him as the kaishakunin, knowing full well that even his best cut would never be fast enough.

Kusuo isn’t easily scared.

there are very few things that actually do scare him, considering he can sense everything coming from a mile away

Deltarune chapter 3 and 4 will be released this year! I was going to celebrate with a drawing of them, but I discovered that I don't have any (complete ones at least), so I decided to post one of Undetale instead. I can't wait to see what our beloved protagonist, forced to be under our control, will do now!

If anyone wants details about the drawing, it's an AU that I made in my head where Frisk is basically in a time loop and can only get out if they do the true pacifist route. The problem is that they don't know this or how to do it, and they did it so many times that they hit rock bottom and did a genocidal route. The genocidal route corrupted their soul, but it gave Chara enough strength to awaken, who was beyond furious that Frisk had killed everyone they considered their people. After finding out what was happening to Frisk, however, Chara decides to help them in exchange for them opening the barrier and freeing the monsters.

Chara is only visible to Frisk as far as they know, they can possess Frisk's body for a while and can freely switch between their human form and monster form, which they received after fusing with Asriel. Frisk has impulse issues, their soul is corrupted and, despite their LV 1 now, their other stats are at maximum, and this dichotomy makes their soul want to destroy everyone in order to increase their LV. This sometimes causes a blackout that, if Frisk doesn't stop themselves or Chara doesn't possess them in time, can end with Frisk killing someone.
